2016 Kids of Steel Marathon
KIDS OF STEEL
We are excited to share that our school will again be participating in Kids of STEEL (KOS), a youth exercise and nutrition program created by Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc., a nonprofit organization that is passionate about promoting the love of running and enhancing community access to health & fitness education and activities.
**We are adding a new training feature this year at Bower Hill, see below for exciting details!!!
To register for Kids of STEEL, please visit www.thepittsburghmarathon.com. Choose the race that corresponds to your child’s training plan. Make sure you choose Bower Hill Elementary – Peters Township to be included on our team. The Toyota of Pittsburgh Kids Marathon has sold out in the past, so please register early. Once you register, your confirmation email will contain a program guide with your child’s training log to track your child’s miles and 26 new foods.
We look forward to having your family involved with Kids of Steel!
Please feel free to email Meghan Myers [email protected] with any questions.
EARN MILES
Additional information on earning your miles: To complete the KOS program, you must earn 26.2 miles. You can earn your miles in a many different ways. The simplest way is to walk or run a mile! However, we know that any movement is good for you so we count other forms of exercise toward your miles. Exercise that results in 15-20 minutes of heavy breathing counts as a mile.
RUN CLUB
In order to help your child reach 25 miles prior to race day, but also stay active during the winter months, Bower Hill will begin an afterschool run and exercise club utilizing some of our resources from the Highmark Wellness Grant. During each session students will stretch, run, walk and exercise to complete 1-2 miles per session. We will have teacher volunteers and also special guest trainers to assist us. *Parent volunteers are always welcome and encouraged as well.
Sessions will be held on Wednesdays from January through April, for a total of 17 sessions. The class will run from 3:30-4:15 in the gym and outside (weather permitting). Each class will begin at dismissal time and end at 4:15pm (parent pick up). The club will meet on Wednesdays. Cost is $15 total (and includes a t-shirt & water bottle), more information on payment will be on the official sign up form. Please return the blue interest form (sent home on Dec. 11th) in order to receive a registration form or contact Meghan Myers [email protected].
